Overview

Lion's mane is the only functional mushroom known to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis. The hericenones (fruiting body) and erinacines (mycelium) cross the blood-brain barrier and promote neurogenesis. A 2009 double-blind trial found significant cognitive improvement at 1,000 mg three times daily in adults with mild cognitive impairment.
